Shape House 101: The Essentials

  • What the heck do you do at Shape House?

    Sweating: We use FAR infrared sweat technology to provide a deep, penetrating heat that warms the body from the inside out, resulting in a profoundly cleansing sweat (all while reclining in a comfy bed and catching up on your favorite shows!). Check out more about the benefits, here.

    Lymphatic: Our lymphatic drainage sessions apply gentle, targeted pressure to encourage the circulation of the lymphatic system, which is linked to cardiovascular function and directly tied to the immune system. The experience is very nurturing, and very complimentary to sweating. In fact, you can even do a lymphatic drainage session prior to your sweat if you like.

  • Why should I sweat?

    There are numerous benefits to sweating regularly, as 16,000 (and counting) Shape House sweaters will tell you. Sweating is a natural form of detoxification that helps the body to free itself from contaminants, resulting in weight loss, brighter skin, deeper sleep, and increased energy. Sweating also helps boost endorphins, alleviate migraines, and soothe muscle soreness. It strengthens immunity, and assists with mood improvement, stress relief, and hormone balance.

    Oh, and p.s.- sweaters are a pretty amazing group of people. Meet them in the relax room and see for yourself. It’s a great way to do a happy hour (or a “healthy hour”, as we call it here).

  • Is there anyone who should not sweat?

    If you have a chronic condition that makes you extremely sensitive to temperature, we recommend checking with your doctor before booking a sweat session. The same advice applies to those who have recently sustained an injury and/or undergone a surgery. If you have hemophilia or take certain medications (including some blood thinners), we typically recommend against sweating. Pregnant women cannot sweat (although we would be thrilled to have you sweat after your baby is born!). If you have been advised to stay away from heat or have any concerns or questions regarding medical conditions and sweating or lymphatic therapy, please talk to your doctor, and also feel free to reach out to us by email at infoatshapehousedotcom.   • How do I book a session?

    This link takes you to an online booking system that allows you to schedule a sweat at any location. Whether you’re a member, part-time sweater, or first-time visitor, you can use our easy program to browse available appointment times and pick the session that works best for you. You can also stop in to any of our locations, and our staff will be happy to help you schedule a session. Please note: we do require a credit card in order to book an appointment, which is used to secure and reserve your session time. Your card will not be charged until your appointment is completed, with the exception of late cancellation, late change, or late arrival fees, should they apply.   • What are your hours?

    Our general hours are as follows: Monday – Sunday: 8:30AM-10:00PM The last bookable sessions begin at 8:30PM. For special hours, please email us at infoatshapehousedotcom.

Shape House 102: The Nitty Gritty

  • How often should I sweat?

    The short answer is: as much as you want. Almost. You can’t sweat more than once a day, as tempting as it might be. However, you can sweat once a day, every day, for a period of time (as long as you are staying super hydrated!). We have various membership options that can make this more affordable for you. Many people who are interested in losing weight or supplementing a rigorous fitness regimen come every other day, which is a wonderful way to make sweating a regular part of your routine. Others find that the best rhythm for them is one or two times weekly, a few times each month, or whenever they can fit a sweat into their schedule. The key is to trust your body, and go with what feels best for you. Any sweat is better than no sweat.
  • Why can I only sweat once a day?

    When you sweat, your body works hard. We limit everyone to one sweat for the same reason we limit sweats to 55-minute sessions: because that’s when the benefits peak. If you’re interested in doing more than one treatment a day, think about trying our lymphatic drainage. Lymphatic drainage treatments are very complimentary to sweating, and can be done in the same day, or even immediately before a sweat session.
  • What the heck is a lymphatic drainage session?

    The lymphatic system is a key part of the immune system, which means that it is directly linked to health and wellness. Our lymphatic drainage sessions provide a stimulating pressure on targeted points of the arms, legs, and waist, to encourage lymphatic circulation. The experience is very relaxing, nurturing, and beneficial on its own, and is also highly complementary to sweating. Lymphatic sessions are typically 55 minutes, and are performed using a full-body suit that is connected to a device similar to those that measure blood pressure. Originally designed to help individuals recover from heart attacks, the lymphatic technology that we use is a very soothing option for wellness therapy.
  • What are the benefits of lymphatic drainage?

    Lymphatic drainage helps boost the immune system, making you less susceptible to colds, flus, and other viruses. It also aids digestion and improves a sluggish colon. The balancing effects of lymphatic drainage provide relief from asthma, earaches, heart fatigue, fibromyalgia, and many other diseases, and ease menstrual cramps as well. Lymphatic drainage also improves the appearance of cellulite, while inducing a deep feeling of relaxation that leads to better sleep.
  • What do I wear?

    If you’re doing a sweat session, you should dress in comfortable, casual, skin-covering clothes. We suggest more cotton, less lycra (so, think pajama bottoms or light sweatpants and a long-sleeved tee-shirt, as opposed to skintight items). Breathable fabrics are the name of the game. Your feet also need to be covered, so socks are key. We can provide clothing for you, or you can wear your own. Either way, we strongly advise bringing clothes to change into after your sweat is finished, because you’ll probably be drenched. If you’re doing a lymphatic drainage session, the same basic dress code applies (long sleeves, long pants, and socks). As the lymphatic session is a dry one, you can feel free to wear leggings or other tighter, less-breathable fabrics.
  • Can I sweat naked?

    No. We’re sorry, but there’s no way around it: we can’t allow naked sweating. If it makes you feel any better, the beds do get quite toasty, and you’ll probably be glad that you have a nice layer of cotton between you and the heat when it all comes down to it.
  • What should I eat?

    A little something, but not a ton of anything. We advise against sweating on an empty stomach, but we also recommend not arriving immediately after a heavy meal. Eating light, fresh food prior to your appointment is best. Salty foods tend to be better than sweet foods, and (of course) drinking plenty of water is always top priority.
  • What is Kangen Alkaline water?

    Kangen alkaline water is an ionized form of H2O that has a higher pH level and smaller molecular clusters than typical drinking water. This means that alkaline water has a balancing effect on the body’s acidity, while the smaller molecules penetrate organs more easily, allowing for faster and deeper hydration. We also add minerals to our alkaline water at Shape House, so that you stay balanced and nourished throughout your sweat.
  • Why do you guys make such a big deal about hydration?

    Basically, because we want you to feel awesome. Your body, just like every other living thing on earth, needs plenty of water to function optimally, so you’ll always feel your best when you are hydrated. When you sweat at Shape House, your body uses water to flush out toxins and other waste materials, and the more water you have to use, the more productive your sweat will be. It’s also important to replenish the water that you sweat out, so that you walk away feeling vibrant, refreshed, and hydrated.
  • Where the heck do I park?

    Shape House Larchmont has 2-hour metered parking available on Larchmont, or 2-hour free parking on our cross street, Rosewood.   • How long is an appointment?

    Sweat sessions are 55 minutes long. 45 minutes is the absolute minimum time for a sweat, and 55 minutes is the absolute maximum. Here’s the scoop: treatments are 55 minutes because that’s the ideal amount of time for the body to sweat. If you cut a session too short, your body doesn’t have the time that it needs to truly use the temperature increase to detox. If you make a session too long, your body has to work harder than it really needs to, without an increase in benefits. This means that we can’t adapt session lengths or accommodate late appointments by any more than 10 minutes. We know it’s strict, but we promise your body will thank you. Lymphatic drainage sessions (unlike sweat sessions) do not require changes to the body’s core temperature, which means that lymphatic drainage appointments can be a little shorter if necessary. However, we still recommend 55-minute sessions in order for your body to receive the maximized benefits. Regardless of the session that you book, please be sure to be on time!
  • Why is sweating so good for detox?

    Sweating is one of the best ways for your body to naturally eliminate toxins, chemicals, heavy metals, fat, and other waste. When you sweat using FAR infrared energy, you encourage your system to detox deeply and efficiently by increasing core temperature, which encourages toxic subcutaneous deposits to loosen and release through the skin. So, while sweating is always great for detox, sweating using FAR infrared technology takes your body’s normal processes to the next level.   • What is the science?

    Our specially designed beds emit FAR infrared energy waves at a level of 9.4 microns, which induce deep-penetration sweating. FAR infrared is a form of natural light just beyond the visible spectrum, meaning that although you cannot see it, you can feel it in the form of radiant heat. Not to be confused with ultraviolet (UV) light, infrared energy is a safe, healthy therapy for all living things. Our infrared beds gradually increase core body temperature by producing waves that reach beyond surface skin to subcutaneous fat and muscle. As your body temperature rises, your system begins to sweat in order to thermo-regulate itself, which allows for the release of toxins, heavy metals, and fat, while stimulating endorphin production and heart rate.   • What the heck are infrared beds?

    FAR infrared beds are specially constructed beds with ceramic plates and infrared blankets that are made to emit safe, deep-penetration infrared heat waves. At Shape House, we manufacture our own beds, which have been tailored based on the feedback we’ve received from over 16,000 sweaters.
  • What are EMFs?

    EMF is an acronym for electromagnetic fields, which are produced by virtually all electric or battery-powered devices. We make our own infrared beds in order to ensure the lowest possible level of EMF production for an electrically powered machine. If you have an air conditioner, a lamp, or any other electrical device in your home, each one probably produces more EMF than our beds.
  • Are there risks?

    There are no major risks associated with sweating for individuals of average health. If you can walk up a flight of stairs, walk your dog, or do any other activity that might result in heightened pulse and increased body heat, you can probably sweat safely and comfortably.   • How is sweating at Shape House different from other kinds of sweating? a. Saunas b. Steam rooms c. Exercise d. Hot flashes

    When you sweat at Shape House, you experience a deep-penetration sweat that is induced by targeted FAR infrared light. This is different from other forms of sweating in many ways- see below: Saunas: When you sweat at Shape House, your face remains outside the FAR infrared blanket, and exposed to fresh air. In a sauna, on the other hand, the entire room is heated. Our common sense tells us that breathing 170° air is not ideal for our systems. Also, when you work so hard to release your toxins from your body, it is somewhat counterproductive to risk breathing them back in. We also happen to find it more comfortable to lie down and watch TV, rather than sit in a wooden box. Steam rooms: At Shape House, we are very careful about the water we serve for a reason- we want to make sure that it is free of toxins and rich in minerals, so that your body gets the nourishing hydration it needs. Now, unless your steam room is perched at the top of the Himalayas, there is a good chance that most of the water that is broken down into steam contains chlorine and other chemicals that are easily breathed in. Along with these water contaminants, steam rooms are often cleaned with intense chemical products that can also be broken down into the air and inhaled. Working out: In the same way that swimming isn’t the same as running, and boxing isn’t the same as bicycling, no workout is the same as sweating. Sweating is simply one more way for your body to lose weight, detox, relax, boost endorphins, increase cardiac function, and burn calories. If you do exercise, sweating is a wonderful way to release the lactic acid that causes muscle soreness. If you don’t, sweating helps you improve your fitness and wellbeing in another way. Many sweaters who don’t exercise regularly find that sweating also encourages them to be more active by giving them more energy and more stamina on a daily basis. Hot flashes: The deliberate sweat that you experience during an infrared session is a very different sensation than the unintentional (and often stressful) sweat that accompanies hot flashes. At Shape House, you purposefully allow your body to sweat in a relaxed way, which lets contaminants escape your system without engaging muscle tension or mental strain. Many of our menopausal sweaters tell us that sweating at Shape House is their way of reducing the frequency and intensity of their hot flashes, and that they feel immense relief in being able to choose when to sweat, as opposed to having an unexpected hot flash.
  • Do you offer different kinds of sweats?

    No. All of our sessions are 55-minute FAR infrared sweat sessions. We do offer varying memberships and packages, but each option differs only in the number of sweats per month, and therefore in the price per sweat. Memberships also provide priority appointment scheduling, which can be particularly helpful as our houses are often booked up.
  • How many calories do I burn?

    The short answer? A lot. A typical sweat session burns somewhere between 800-1,600 calories, between the 55-minutes in the bed and the 36-hour metabolic boost that follows. For comparison, swimming or biking for the same period of time burns between 500-900 on average. Throwing a frisbee or walking the dog burns 150-300, and sitting in bed watching Netflix burns about 40-80. Pssst- you still get to sit in bed and watch Netflix here. Just saying.
  • Will I be gross and smelly?

    Maybe, maybe not. After witnessing thousands of people sweat, it has become clear to us that everyone sweats differently. Still, the very first sweat you do at Shape House tends to release more toxins than the ones after that, so you may experience a little more stinky-stickiness. The more you sweat, the more diluted that sweat will be, because you’ll have less of a toxic build-up in your system. So, the more you sweat, the less icky your sweat will be. Regardless of stinky-stickiness level, you should plan on being drenched (picture jumping into a pool with your clothes on). With that in mind, we definitely recommend bringing a change of clothes for after your sweat.
  • Can I/Should I shower?

    We do have showers that you can use, so you certainly can. However, we recommend that you don’t, unless you absolutely have to. Here’s the scoop: after your session is complete, your body continues to sweat until it returns to normal temperature- meaning that your metabolism stays up, calories continue to be burned, and detoxing continues even after your session is technically finished. Taking a shower cuts that cooling process short (since even a hot shower is colder than your body’s post-sweat core temperature), and robs you of the benefits that you would get during that period. As an average, we recommend waiting at least one to two hours before showering.
  • How do you keep the beds sanitary?

    We use hospital-grade germicidal cleaner in between each session at Shape House. We also use disposable sheets that are replaced between each treatment, so your sweat doesn’t touch anyone and you don’t touch anybody else’s.
  • What the heck does it feel like? How will I feel afterwards?

    The first forty minutes of your sweat will feel cozily warm. Most people feel extremely relaxed, some feel comfortably sleepy. The last fifteen minutes of the session are more challenging. In that time, your heart rate will likely increase, and you may notice that you are sweating more profusely. Although we do not increase the temperature of the bed, you will feel like we snuck in and cranked it up. We promise we didn’t. It’s the same temperature the whole time. Afterwards, sweaters report feeling refreshed, clear-headed, and rested. Many feel a boost in mood and energy, and describe simply feeling cleaner inside. Just like a workout, some sweats will feel better than others.
  • What do I do afterwards?

    The short answer is: whatever you want. Different people do different things. Some people come, sweat, and leave, others stay in the relax room for a while, having tea and chatting with other sweaters. Some people prefer to use the relax room as a place for reflection and meditation, an opportunity to organize their to-do lists, or simply a quiet space to daydream. We root for you to do whatever feels right, and whatever fits best with your day.
  • What does it cost, and how do I pay?

    A single session costs $50. If you buy a pack of 10, 20, or 30 sweat sessions, the cost goes down to as low as $36 per sweat. We also offer monthly memberships, which can result in costs as low as $30 per sweat. Find out more about our packages and membership options. We accept all major credit cards, including Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express. We do not accept cash or personal checks.
  • What’s the difference between member and non-member sweats?

    There is no fundamental difference between member and non-member sessions. However, if you are a Shape House member, you receive priority booking services, which means that you are able to access beds that are specially reserved for members to use. This means that Shape House members are able to schedule sessions, even on busy days, more easily than non-members.
  • Do you sell gift cards?

    Yes, we do sell gift cards. Send us an email at infoatshapehousedotcom, or drop in to one of our locations, and we will be happy to help get you a gift card that fits your needs.
  • How can I pay less?

    We offer several memberships and packages that allow you to pay significantly less per session. You can even share your membership with a friend or multiple friends (up to three people total). We also have non-reoccurring monthly package deals available. Check out the options, here.
  • How do I cancel a session?

    This link takes you to our online booking system, where you may log in to cancel or reschedule your appointment. We ask that you cancel or reschedule at least 24 hours prior to your originally scheduled time. Late-cancellations, no-show appointments, and/or late arrivals result in an automatic charge and/or a loss of a membership session.
  • What is your cancellation policy?

    If you need to reschedule or cancel a session, we ask that you do so at least 24 hours in advance. You can do so online or by giving us a call at (855) 567-2346. If you need to change your session within 24 hours of your sweat, you will unfortunately be subject to a late-change or cancellation fee of $50 (fees apply even if you purchased a deal online).
  • What is your late policy?

    Due to the fact that the length of our sweat sessions is designed with your wellness in mind, we are usually unable to accommodate late arrivals, as doing so would require us to shorten your session (or that of the sweater after you). However, if you know that you will be late to your sweat, please call us as soon as possible at (855) 567-2346. We will do our very best to find a way to adjust your appointment, but please be aware that all late arrivals are subject to a fee, or the loss of one membership session.
  • How do I cancel or downgrade my membership?

    If you wish to cancel or downgrade your membership, we ask that you reach out to us by email at infoatshapehousedotcom at least fifteen days before your monthly renewal date. You will receive a confirmation email marking the official cancellation, and monthly automatic charges will cease immediately. If request is made fewer than fifteen days from the next bill date – the following payment will still be processed. Please be aware that when a membership is cancelled, remaining sessions and membership benefits will no longer be available. However, we still want to give all of our sweaters the best deal we can. So, if you would like to use remaining sessions after you cancel or downgrade your membership, you have one month after your final active/billed membership month to do so. Please keep in mind these sessions can be shared.
  • How do I book with a living social, groupon, or other outside vendor voucher?

    If you purchase a session through an outside vendor, you still use the typical booking system to schedule an appointment ( click here to book online ). Then, just bring your voucher along with you on the day of your appointment, and we will credit your sweat accordingly. Please note that even if you purchased a voucher for your sweat, you will be asked to provide a credit card in order to reserve your appointment. However, your card will not be charged unless you incur late-cancellation or late-arrival fees ( click here to see our cancellation policy ).
  • How do I come with a group of people?

    If you’re interested in bringing a group of six or more people to Shape House, and/or would like to schedule a group sweat for a special event, please reach out to us by email at infoatshapehousedotcom and tell us a little bit about your group, your occasion, and your schedule. We will get back to you as soon as possible, and do everything that we can to make your sweat amazing! Please note that the number of beds available differs by location. Our Santa Monica location has six available beds, our Pasadena location has seven, and our Larchmont location has eight.
  • What the heck are those colorful bottles in the front room?

    When we discover something we love, we share it. The pretty bottles in our front room are no exception. They are a line of color therapy sprays that we adore, and we hope you enjoy them as much as we do. Shape House 103: What If?

  • What if I don’t like heat?

    Many of our sweaters that don’t like traditional heat find that FAR infrared creates a different sensation, one that they don’t mind as much, or even one that they come to enjoy. Others simply feel that the benefits they receive from sweating far outweigh their dislike of heat. However, it definitely does get toasty during sweats, so if you are averse to heat, please bear that in mind. We recommend that you give it a try, and if sweating isn’t for you, consider doing lymphatic drainage sessions instead.
  • What if I don’t sweat very much?

    Everyone is different, and we encourage all of our sweaters to trust that their body is doing what is right for them. That being said, there are numerous factors that affect how much you sweat on any given day, including hydration, stress, sleep, and hormones. If you want to have the most productive sweat possible, try to arrive well rested and well hydrated, and avoid recent or excessive alcohol intake.   • What if I’m pregnant?

    Unfortunately, we cannot allow pregnant women to sweat. However, we highly recommend sweating as a postpartum therapy, and we would love to have you visit us after your baby is born!
  • What if I have to pee?

    Interestingly, our bodies can typically sense that the best way to utilize water during a session is through sweating, and your system will usually avoid sending water to your bladder while you are in the bed. However, we do encourage sweaters to use the restroom before their appointments, and you can always leave the bed if you find that you need to.
  • What if I want to keep my phone with me?

    We recommend that you take sweating as an opportunity to fully relax, and give yourself a break from your phone. We also recommend against phone usage due to the fact that your sweat will be more productive if you keep both arms inside the infrared blanket throughout the session. However, if you do feel more comfortable with your phone, you are certainly free to keep it during your session. We do ask that you keep your phone on silent out of respect for other sweaters, and bear in mind that phone calls are absolutely not allowed.
  • What if I want to use my laptop?

    We typically recommend that you take sweating as an opportunity to fully relax, and give yourself a break from your laptop. We also recommend against using your laptop due to the fact that your sweat will be more productive if you keep both arms inside the infrared blanket throughout the session.
  • What if I want to listen to my own music?

    If you’d like to listen to your own music, please feel free to do so! We provide headphones that you can plug into your phone or other device, or you can bring your own. We are also happy to help you create a custom Pandora station if you like, so please feel free to ask!
  • What if I want to read a book?

    The lighting in Shape House is kept low for relaxation purposes, so reading a book is unfortunately not a very practical option. We also recommend that you keep your arms inside the infrared blanket throughout the session in order to achieve the most productive sweat. As an alternative to reading, you can certainly listen to an audiobook by plugging our headphones into your phone or tablet.
  • What if I want to chat with my friend(s) during a sweat?

    Unfortunately, out of respect for our other sweaters, we do not permit conversation during sweat sessions. However, if you do come with a friend, we are happy to open the curtains that separate beds from one another so that you can share the experience. The relax room is also a great place to catch up with friends after your sweat is finished.
  • What if I want my child to sweat?

    We typically do not allow individuals under the age of 18 to sweat. However, we have made exceptions in the past under specific circumstances, so please feel free to reach out to us at infoatshapehousedotcom, and we will be happy to talk to you about your child’s needs.
  • What if I want to bring my pet?

    Unfortunately, we cannot allow animals in Shape House. If you have exceptional circumstances that require you to bring your pet to an appointment, please contact us beforehand at infoatshapehousedotcom, and we will be happy to discuss your situation with you.
  • What if I’m claustrophobic?

    Most sweaters find that they do not feel claustrophobic during their sweat session, as there is no complete enclosure (your head remains outside of the bed at all times). The Velcro closures that we use on our infrared blankets also help to alleviate feelings of entrapment, as they make it very easy to get in and out of the bed on your own. If you are claustrophobic, please feel free to share your concerns with us, and we will do everything possible to make sure that you remain comfortable throughout your session.
  • What if I’m being treated for cancer?

    Although we do not recommend sweating for individuals who are currently undergoing treatment for cancer, many of our sweaters who have previously experienced cancer treatment recommend sweating as a great way to detoxify residual medications and lingering side effects.
  • What if I’m on my menstrual cycle?

    Many of our female sweaters find that sweating is a great way to alleviate cramps and help counter hormonal imbalances. However, we do ask that you bear in mind that sweating may increase menstrual flow, so if you already experience heavy bleeding you may not want to sweat during your period. As always, we root for you to trust your body, and do whatever feels good to you.
  • What if I’m on medication?

    There are some medications (including certain prescription blood thinners) that we do not recommend in conjunction with sweating. If you are on medication of any kind, please talk to your doctor, and feel free to reach out to us at infoatshapehousedotcom, so that we can talk about what is best for you.
  • What if I have diabetes?

    If you have diabetes, please talk to your doctor before booking an appointment at Shape House, to determine if an increase in core body temperature is a healthy option for you.
  • What if I have high/low blood pressure?

    Sweating is a cardio workout, and we ask all sweaters with high or low blood pressure to bear that in mind. If you have a blood pressure condition, please talk to your doctor before booking an appointment at Shape House, to determine if an increase in core body temperature is a healthy option for you.
  • What if I have high/low blood sugar?

    If you have high or low blood sugar, please talk to your doctor to determine if an increase in core body temperature is a healthy option for you.
  • What if I have plastic surgery implants?

    If you have pins, rods, artificial joints, or other medical implants, we typically recommend against sweating, as a core body temperature increase may not be a comfortable choice for you. However, there are exceptions, and we have found various ways to help some sweaters that have medical implants to keep their implants located away from the infrared exposure during their sessions.   • What if I have migraines?

    Many sweaters who have suffered from migraines find that sweat sessions greatly improve their condition, and we highly recommend sweating as a helpful treatment. We also recommend that you pay particular attention to your water intake, as dehydration can be a leading cause of migraines.
  • What if I have allergies?

    Many clients who suffer from allergies, from skin allergies to asthma, have reported that their allergies are lessened as a result of sweating. As always, we do recommend that you talk to your doctor if you are concerned in any way.
  • What if I have an injury or have recently had surgery?
